Creating Sustainable New Wealth

The purpose of this blog is to encourage the creation of an industry that will create wealth for Filipinos, many of them living in the edge of our social, political and economic currents. The Philippines holds an enormous potential for cultured edible birds' nests (EBN). In 2007 the world market was estimated at US$4 BILLION, up from US$1.7B in 2004. Malaysia's industry estimates that the market will grow by double digits for at least the next two decades. If Indonesia has approximately 150,000 nest farms and Thailand, 50,000, Malaysia, 36,000, then a few thousand nest farms lies entirely in the realm of possibility for our country. Philippine production figures are not reflected in the region's reports but is estimated at 5 tons a year - a drop in the bucket of the 200 tons a year market. All of these nests come from caves harvested with little regard for the breeding cycle and sustainability of the trade. Unless nest farming technology is adopted, the famous El Nido nests will be a thing of the past, like T. Rex.
The information contained in this blog is open to all and is the result of almost five years of research and experimentation on EBN farming in the Philippines. Comments are most certainly welcome.

  2. I have a collection of sounds and I have tried them - with dissapointing results. I have not observed any reaction similar to what harry kok reports in his blog. I suspect the sounds are like dialect - it must be recorded in the vicnity of the test site. I have received reports of house colonies in Leyte. Most likely these are esculenta (grass) nests.

  4. Price will depend on on the species that produces the nest and its size, color and shape. The price you quote is for raw, grass nests (esculenta). Fuciphaga nests fetch much higher prices. The best prices I have found so far (although I don't sell regularly at present) are in Binondo, Manila.

  6. thanks for answering my blog, yes you are right the nest i mentioned here is raw...i have found also some buyer of nest in makati cost PhP 1900.00 per gram, but i don´t know if the price is reaw or the cleaned one.In binondo you mentioned how much they buy per kilo.where in binondo. Can you please tell me also..tc

  7. You must mean P 190 per gram which translates to P 190,000 per kilogram. This is similar to the price quoted at El Nido. According to my Indonesian consultant this is a retail price for cleaned AAA standard nests. If you can get this price, I suggest that you go for it. There are no higher prices in Binondo.
